GripSafe® Works With Any Standard Tire — No Proprietary Rubber, No Premium Per Tire

Run-flat technology adds $100–$300 per tire for a safety benefit you may never need. GripSafe® puts the safety technology in the wheel — once — and then works with every standard tire you ever mount on it.

Most safety technology in the tire industry comes with a recurring cost. Run-flat tires add $100–$300 per tire — which means $400–$1,200 per set, every time you replace tires. Armored inserts add a similar premium. Sealant systems require refills.

GripSafe® works differently. The safety technology is in the wheel — machined into the rim's bead seat as a permanent mechanical feature. You buy it once. After that, every tire you mount is a standard passenger tire at standard prices.

Why Run-Flat Tires Require Special Rubber

Run-flat tires achieve their zero-pressure drivability through reinforced sidewall construction — a thick rubber insert layer molded into the sidewall that supports vehicle weight when air pressure drops to zero. This reinforcement is the entire mechanism.

The result is a tire that is fundamentally different in construction from a standard passenger tire. It requires different compound formulations, different mold geometry, different curing parameters. It can't be made on standard tire production lines. You can't buy run-flat performance and then choose whatever brand or model you prefer — you're limited to the models each manufacturer offers in a run-flat variant.

GripSafe® doesn't use the tire for any of its safety function. The mechanical interlock is entirely in the wheel. The tire's job is exactly what it's always been: grip, ride comfort, fuel efficiency, longevity. You choose whatever tire performs best for those criteria. The safety function comes from the wheel.

What This Means for Tire Selection

With run-flat tires, your choice of tire is constrained. Not every model is available in a run-flat variant. Performance tires, particularly in wider sizes and lower profiles, often have no run-flat equivalent. You accept the limitations of what's available in run-flat construction — typically stiffer ride, heavier weight, and 30–50% higher per-tire cost.

With GripSafe® wheels, your tire selection is completely open. Summer performance tire, all-season touring, track-day compound — whatever you want to run, in whatever brand performs best for your application. There is no run-flat version required. No premium built into the rubber.

What This Means for Repairs

Run-flat tires have one critical limitation that compounds their total cost: sidewall punctures cannot be repaired. The reinforced insert is damaged by the sidewall flexing under zero-pressure load and cannot be safely plugged or patched. Any sidewall event means full tire replacement.

For AWD vehicle owners, this creates a specific financial risk. Most AWD manufacturers require all four tires to be within 2/32" of tread depth to avoid damaging the center differential or torque-coupling system. An unrepairable single tire on a moderately worn set means replacing all four — $900–$1,800 for a single incident.

Standard tires — the ones GripSafe® works with — are repairable through normal plug-and-patch procedures for tread punctures. One nail in the tread is a $30 repair, not a $1,200 replacement cycle.

GripSafe® wheels cost more than standard aftermarket wheels. The math is simple: the premium you pay once for the wheel is less than the ongoing per-tire premium you'd pay across 3–4 tire replacement cycles on a run-flat approach — and that's before factoring in the AWD incident risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any brand of tire on GripSafe® wheels?

Yes. GripSafe® wheels work with any standard passenger tire that matches your vehicle's recommended size specification. Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Yokohama — any brand, any performance category. The mechanical interlock in the bead seat is tire-brand agnostic. You choose based on performance, price, and availability.

Do tire shops need special equipment to mount tires on GripSafe® wheels?

No. GripSafe® wheels mount and dismount on standard tire machines. The toothed interlock geometry is in the inner bead seat, not the outer mounting lip where tooling makes contact. Any shop that can mount a standard forged wheel can mount tires on GripSafe® wheels without additional equipment or training.

What happens to the tire after a 0-PSI run on GripSafe® wheels?

A tire driven at 0 PSI will show sidewall heat stress and is not safe for continued road use. You'll need a tire replacement. The wheel itself is unaffected — the interlock geometry is machined from forged aluminum and designed to sustain 0-PSI operation without damage. The cost is a standard tire replacement, not a wheel replacement.
